I thought I’d send in my opinions of Apple TV since you were talking about it and wondered how good it is. First of all, I’ve always thought Apple was trying to put an end to Podcasting by taking it over with iTunes. It’s the worst Podcatcher ever, but no one else seems to be interested in creating a better one. I’ve had an Apple TV since they first came out. They’re like most Apple products. A good idea with the miinimum amount of features that seem to keep the Cupertino Cult Members happy, but drive the rest of us nuts. The lack of a reset button was a minor annoyance with version 1 & 1.1, but it’s a lot worse with Take 2. The earlier version would freeze up and if you’re lucky, it would reset itself. If not, I’d have to unplug the power and plug it back in. That’s a great way to wear it or burn it out, so Apple is doing something right. As we fry our Apple TVs and feel like we can’t live without it, we go buy another one and Apple makes a lot of cash. With Take 2, the Apple TV acts more like a Mac. It doesn’t like staying connected wirelessly, so iTunes often tells me it’s not responding and the only way to get it to respond is to disconnect the power. Since this happens maybe 4-5 times a day, they’ll get fried a lot faster. I can’t network it with an ethernet cable, so I’m stuck with doing it this way. It would have been good if they had included a reboot feature. The only thing they have is to reset some of the features or set it to factory default, which apparently brings it back to version 1. It did that with version 1.1, but I’m not sure about Take 2. I hope it doesn’t go back to version 1 from Take 2. When the Apple TV came out, they were pretty much useless for Canadians. We couldn’t buy movies or TV shows, so it was just a way to play Podcasts and music on TV, which could just be done with most computers. The first time it became useful for Canadians is when they added YouTube, but the cursor was impossible to control when adding your login info or for searching videos. It couldn’t move down a line, so I’d have to move the cursor up and make a run for the line I wanted and hope it stopped there. This little bug is the only reason I was looking forward to Take 2 and to my delight, that was fixed. There are also some other YouTube features added that makes that feature more useful. I also like the Flickr feature. The Catfish Show Flickr account was the first I added, since that was the only Flickr account I knew about. I added mine, but most of my pictures were set to private, so all I could see from my account was a tribute graphic to our old cat, DandyLion. Sometimes it’s nice to have a slide show going on our big screen with Frank Zappa, Kim Mitchell or Max Webster playing in the background. As for Podcasts, I am one of those people who listens to audio Podcasts on my TV. We’re mostly a laptop household and laptop speakers are too pathetic, so I might as well play them on the TV. This is another feature they cheaped out on. I’d love to choose a Podcast and have it play all episodes in order. It would come in handy for short Podcasts, such as Comedy4Cast or Podictionary, but no. I have to select the episode I want to hear, play it and then choose the next one and keep going on until I get tired of selecting each one or I’m finished listening. Adding a Party Shuffle or On The Go type playlist would be great. Now that Canadians can purchase a limited number of TV shows with the Apple TV, it’s fairly useful for us, if you like the shows they offer, but there’s something else that makes it even more useful for Canadians, but it has nothing to do with Apple. I mostly use Apple TV to watch TV shows I’ve recorded with Beyond TV now that BTV has added support for transcoding to H.264 and presets for Apple TV and iPods. I don’t quite use it the way Snapstream intended because I edit out the commercials before transcoding it. It’s also designed to be a Podcast server (give iTunes an RSS feed and it’ll get all the shows that BTV has transcoded and send them to the Apple TV or iPod), but since I’m subscribed to over 200 Podcasts, I don’t want my TV shows lost in there, so I do it the hard way and they end up in the TV Shows section. I really wish I could get a video camera and do a segment on PVRs for my Podcast. Overall, I do recommend the Apple TV, especially if you’re used to the way Apple does things and don’t mind all the common sense features left out of all their products or if you want a way to watch TV shows you’ve recorded wiith a home-made PVR or TiVo through an HDMI or Component cable. tags:bob goyetche, IA Consultants, mark blevis, pab, podcamp toronto, podcamptoronto2008, podcasters across borders, Podcasts, Zero to Podcastingbob goyetche, IA Consultants, mark blevis, pab, podcamp toronto, podcamptoronto2008, podcasters across borders, Podcasts, Zero to Podcasting

What FTP Client do you Use?
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed Nat from Nat.tv called in during the live call portion of our show tonight. It was fun to just chit chat for once. The next caller wondered what type of FTP clients are good. Pretty much the only recommendation I have for Windows is WinSCP. It’s free, it’s fast and it works great. It uses the same client as FileZilla. To me, FileZilla is actually ugly, and I don’t much like it. However, using WinSCP is just nice. WinSCP is an open source SFTP client and FTP client for Windows. Its main function is the secure file transfer between a local and a remote computer. Beyond this, WinSCP offers basic file manager functionality. It uses Secure Shell (SSH) and supports, in addition to Secure FTP, also legacy SCP protocol. Its main function is safe copying of files between a local and a remote computer. Features include: Graphical user interface Translated into several languages Integration with Windows (drag&drop, URL, shortcut icons) U3 support All common operations with files Support for SFTP and SCP protocols over SSH-1 and SSH-2 and plain old FTP protocol Batch file scripting and command-line interface Directory synchronization in several semi or fully automatic ways Integrated text editor Support for SSH password, keyboard-interactive, public key and Kerberos (GSS) authentication Integrates with Pageant (PuTTY authentication agent) for full support of public key authentication with SSH Windows Explorer-like and Norton Commander-like interfaces Optionally stores session information Optionally supports standalone operation using a configuration file in place of registry entries, suitable for operation from removable media For a Mac, there really isn’t an “excellent” FTP client as of yet. But if you’re running Windows at all… it’s WinSCP FTW! Ftp Client Pro Webmaster Software With Resell Rights. Design Your Website And Upload It To The Internet In 8 Hours. On Building an Online Business
Sherry Borzo of DSM Buzz is the host of an interview podcast show called Entrepreneur People, on BlogTalkRadio.com. She broadcasts from Des Moines, Iowa in the American Midwest. Sherry graciously asked me to be on her show as a guest earlier this week. She is the nicest person — you can just feel her warmth and friendliness through the audio. She made me feel at ease instantly, the mark of a good interviewer. Sherry wanted to talk about some of my experiences building this online business called Small Business Trends. Please tune in and support Sherry’s show, as we discuss such points as: Strategy for building an online business while you consult or freelance on the side: Yes, it is a lot of work because you’re essentially holding down two jobs. But if you are bootstrapping a business startup, farming out your services is one of the best ways to get funding. You fund your fledgling business from the money you make in freelancing or consulting. Take your earnings from being a freelancer and plow them into the business, dollar by dollar, month by month. Invest in marketing, a better site design, content creation, and improved site features, as you bring in more money. We all have something we can offer as a freelancer or as a service provider if we look hard enough — writing, software programming, project management, graphics design, consulting. Find whatever that is. Do that while you build your business in the evenings and on weekends using the money you earn from freelancing. Don’t give up too soon as an entrepreneur: It takes most people at least a year, sometimes two, to make meaningful money from an advertising-based site. There is a ramp-up period while you build a brand, get pages indexed in the search engines, and build enough traffic to generate meaningful advertising income. If you’re bootstrapping it tends to take more time, because you never have enough money to do things as soon as you’d like. Many entrepreneurs underestimate the time and give up too soon. (Remember that what you see here today on Small Business Trends is the result of 4 years.) Your job as an entrepreneur is to find alternate earnings so that you can stick with it! There is much much more, too. Listen to the entire podcast — it’s a little under 30 minutes. You can click the red and yellow arrow below to hear it. PS, a little trivia: I was speaking from my hotel room in San Diego. If you listen closely you can hear housekeeping rapping on the door in the background.

15 Stunning Cutting-Edge Gadgets and Technologies
We live in a spectacular time. The pace of technology steadily increases, new fields of science are heavily explored and innovative concepts emerge almost every day, resulting in stunning and overwhelming products. The impact of these products can be tremendous: in fact, new technology can completely revolutionize the way we play, communicate, work and live our lives. Some of these products are just eye-candy, some are useful, some are visionary and some may become revolutionary in the next years. In this post we present stunning examples of cutting edge technology which is already reality today or will become reality in 2008. Please notice that some videos might not provide you with a concrete idea of what the technology offers, e.g. it’s impossible to display the advantages of 3D-TV using videos produced by a 2D-video-camera. You might want to take a look at the articles User Experience Of The Future which covers innovative developments in field of user interface design and Innovative Designs and Devices which covers stunning design concepts and ideas which can become reality in the future. You have more examples? Comment on this article! Examples Of Cutting-Edge Technology Diesel Show: Underwater Magic (YouTube)Diesel s Spring/Summer 08 catwalk show was nothing short of stunning. While regular human models paced up and down the runway, a host of polyp-like CGI characters appeared in mid-air to interact with them within an underwater landscape. These animated holograms were entirely viewable from both sides of the stage. A perfect blend of cutting edge digital art and performance. Good Bye, Godzilla (YouTube)Is it the future of advertising? Special effects helped to create a giant sea monster in the Tokyo Bay to promote the upcoming film, The Water Horse. Click the image to get to the live-video of the monster. Funky Forest (Desc)Funky Forest’ is an interactive ecosystem where children create trees with their body and then divert the water flowing from the waterfall to the trees to keep them alive. The health of the trees contributes to the overall health of the forest and the types of creatures that inhabit it. Toyota 3D Projector System (YouTube)The Musion high definition projector system uses unique HD video projection, producing three dimensional moving images within a stage setting. Stunning visual experience. Philips Daylight Window (YouTube)A new concept in interactive lighting from Philips. Quite strange presentation, but very beautiful technology. Bonus: Promotional video by Philips. Mitsubishi Laser 3D TVs (Photos)Mitsubishi Laser 3D TVs not only provide the ultimate picture quality, they are also capable of delivering a true 3D viewing experience. The difference is hard to tell from the pictures, but the technology looks very promising. Philips WOWvx 3D Display delivers the 3D TV viewing experience without the need for special 3D glasses. Philips introduced a WOWvx 3D display, measuring 132 inches (335.28cm). WOWvx technology indicates the use of technology related to 3-dimensional viewing experience. This technology comprises the technology to manufacture autostereoscopic lenticular 3D displays, display signal processing to generate multiple views for 3D displays, interface specification for 3D displays based on the 2D-plus-Depth format and 3D content creation and conversion tools. 3D-TV is coming, available in 2008. Johnny Chung Lee’s Wii ExperimentsOk, basically that’s a hack. But we’ll probably see more of this in the coming years. Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space. A must-see. Wii GlovesWii Gloves uses a standard Wii Remote to allow you to control your TV or screen-based app using a set of sensitive gloves. No touching, no pointing — pure hand magic. Microsoft PlayAnywherePlayAnywhere is a new surface-based computing experience developed by Microsoft. Imagine your personal physical desktop as your computer screen. Bluetooth photosynch is an extension of playanywhere where your “desktop” interacts with your bluetooth enabled device and displays pictures from your phone on any surface. This is what a portable version of Microsoft Surface will look like. IO2 Heliodisplay Technology (MegaVideo.com)Heliodisplay technology projects video onto the thin air. It can even be interacted with so that you can use your hand as a mouse pointer. Mid-air video display. Holograms are coming. 360 Degree 3D Holograhic Display (YouTube)The Interactive 360 Degree Light Field Display won the Best Emerging Technology Award at the SIGGRAPH conference. The system is capable of producing interactive 3D graphics to multiple viewers in 360 degrees. Quicktime version. Kung Fu GameThe installation enables users to interact with full body while playing. Cameras record player movement and “superimpose a two-dimensional silhouette of them onto a computer screen”. It will make its debut in arcades and camera-equipped consoles. Augmented Reality BMW augmented realityInstead of following printed text instructions you can now use 3D-glasses to assemble the same tasks in a more effective and simple way. Using augmented reality, the mechanic receives additional three-dimensional information on the engine he is repairing, for example, to help him in diagnosing and solving the fault. Apart from the real environment, he sees virtually animated components, the tools to be used and hears instruction on each of the working steps through headphones integrated inside the goggles. levelHead is a new conceptual game using techniques and tools from augmented reality. Using tilt motions, the player moves a character through rooms that appear inside one of several cubes on a table. Each room is logically connected by a series of doors, though some doors lead nowhere (they are traps). Are such games to be expected in the next years? Car simulationReal-time 3D tracking in action. An example of use of live video imagery which is digitally processed and “augmented” by the addition of computer-generated graphics. Total Immersions Augmented RealityTotal Immersion’s D Fusion technology allows for real-time video capture and merging between video streams and virtual 3D objects. A demonstration of Augmented Reality, the seamless mixing of the real and the virtual. An old demo from 2004, but still quite impressive and gives an outlook of what the future might look like. A newer demo from 2007. Bonus: 2057 — The City 2057 — The CityA video about what technology developers and scientists plan to have accomplished by 2057. If we could take a ride with a time machine to New York in the year 2057 we would probably didn’t get our mouth shut if everything what scientists predict in this science-fictionized documentation becomes reality - holographic companions, “printed” hearts and a big-brother-organization that monitors the health of their clients. Take a look at the city in 2057 and see how what sounds like future music of tomorrow could rule the life of a citizen in the future.

7 Steps to a Flat Classroom: The Presentation
I’ve given several presentations lately and, although I’m posting these on my personal wiki, I thought some of you would like to see the slides.Flat Classroom Mashup/ 7 Steps to a Flat Classroom | View | Upload your ownThis was given last night at the Discovery Educators presentation.Julie and I talking about Flat Classroom 2007 as we mashup Pink and FriedmanIf you want to hear Julie Lindsay and I present the first part of this, I have an elluminate recording from today when she and I presented to some teachers in North Carolina. You’ll hear Julie and I talk about this year’s Flat Classroom project structure, organization, and methods. You can see all of my slideshows on slideshare - www.slideshare.net/coolcatteacher/slideshows.Putting a little Zen in ItI’ve been reworking all of my presentations (and changing how I teach presentations), based upon Garr Reynolds’ amazing book Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery (Voices That Matter). Don’t be put off by how many slides some of my presentations have, it is more slides, less talking, actually. Think of it as if you’re a live narrator for a documentary! If you look at my presentation from last Tuesday at the Center for Quality Teaching and Learning, the first 14 slides literally take 1 minute and 20 seconds. I did them for my students as a demonstration — and they agreed it is a much better way to present, although it is very different! It is about using graphically appealing slides along with two other items: speakers notes (detailed notes for me– although I usually practice to the point I don’t need them) and handouts (I like to use Google notebook — see mine from last Tuesday.)Garr talks about not producing “sliduments” but have a “document” to hand out. My intro: | View | Upload your ownHow I teach Presentation ZenDemonstrate the technique — I have my students time my intro of myself and ask them to guess how many slides I use.Elicit emotion with at least one slide - I end the presentation with my picture of the shark (slide #14).We talk about the principle of thirds, share lots of examples, talk about Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity, and just look at a lot of Garr’s work. We also talk about full bleeding off of the page.We discuss scripting and storyboarding.I give them super sticky notes and the storyboard pages. They brainstorm about their topic with their group and sketch out ideas on the sticky notes — most use walls or desks to stick them in the order that they think they want. When they are done and have settled on the order, I have them stick it on the storyboard pages and flesh it out a little more. (This is why you need the supersticky notes!)THEN, they go into PowerPoint — not before! You can imagine — right now my walls have sticky notes ALL OVER THEM! But, we’re getting some great presentations for me to share with you next week!Slideshows aren’t Downloadable!I’ve had some people e-mail me about downloading my slideshows. As much as I’d love to give them away, I am now using istockphoto for some of the graphics and need to make sure that I respect the agreement that I make with the photographers there. So, I cannot GIVE them to you to present, however, I CAN share them with you to give you your own ideas. (And yes, I still use creative commons search, however, istock photo is just so FAST and they have great pictures.)I wish there was a way to easily mark or delineate the slides I can give you and those that are the copyrighted pictures… that is the struggle with these things!tag: Garr Reynolds, presentation zen, Julie Lindsay, flat classroom, flatclassroom, presentations, education, teaching, coolcatteacher, innovation, teacherThis work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License.

Quit Your Day Job: High Places
Unless you were born with one of those silver spoons, you likely work a day job, sneaking time for your own business when not taking care of someone else’s. You’re not alone. Every week, Brandon Stosuy finds out how our favorite indie artists make ends meet…The Brooklyn duo and BTW High Places don’t need too much of an introduction in these parts. Personally, I find myself listening to to their scattered, recently collected tracks quite a bit without getting tired of the dreamy, oddly tropical percussiveness. In fact, the songs keep getting better. At one point in the following interview Rob describes their sound at a particular show as possessing a Flying Saucer Attack quality. There’s definitely that — kinda like Beat Happening channeling a FSA steel-drum band, but with better, airier singing (no offense, Heather and Calvin).Mary babysits an eight year old in Manhattan and until recently Rob was teaching Printmaking at Pratt Institute. Though he left that gig, he currently does freelance graphic design work. In the following discussion, we talk about those jobs, but also High Places’ cats, Mary’s zinemaking, and the sort of smells that well up in the touring van of two vegans. When you’re finished with all of that, take a listen to “Golden,” a track that Mary says “will appear in some incarnation on the full-length we are currently working on.”

Donewaiting Year Five Friday Preview: Deathly Fighter
MP3: Bloody Cup Of all the bands on the current Columbus landscape, Deathly Fighter are the most difficult to pin down. Their first show sounded like an SPK groove on repeat. It was a fairly well-received set considering the number of ideas brought forth (1). Their next show was more distorted and antagonistic, clearing the room at Bourbon St. in about ten minutes. Their recordings explore an assortment of black and white sounds from early Hardcore to Industrial, classic Dub to Dubstep to House, without ever fully committing to a single genre. And then there’s the Deathly Fighter aesthetic, which may be more clearly defined than the music itself, with themes of sadomasochism, violence, cassette culture and DIY appearing in their graphic design and general presence. Though it is unclear exactly where Smoke, Christian and Mike will take Deathly Fighter next, one thing is certain: those looking for the same old rock will be disappointed. In the words of Zachery Allen Starkey, “I like Deathly Fighter”. Deathly Fighter are playing one of the two Donewaiting.com 5 Year Anniversary Shows. They ll be at the Friday show at Carabar with Sinkane, Grave Blankets, and This Moment in Black History. For more details, click here.

Let me introduce you to my personal cast of characters: The Husband Me GD aka Game Dude MK aka Mushroom King [For regular readers, I’d like to apologize. You might have been expecting a video. And let me tell you, I recorded one. But when I played it back, I honestly looked like a goob and my face was all crooked and my eyes looked crazy and well, who wants to encounter that for the very first time? So … no video. (I can hear the collective groans from here).] I’ve been married to my best friend for nearly 18 years. We have two teenage sons: GD, 15, and MK, 13 (well, he’ll be 13 in a few weeks). I’m a web designer by trade, a wannabe, closet writer by night. I work from my home and spend my days answering emails, updating websites, answering emails, teaching myself code, answering emails, designing graphics and did I mention answering emails? I maintain two other blogs: Write Stuff and Blog Talkers. Write Stuff is a collaborative blog written by writers for writers. Blog Talkers offers weekly questions to help bloggers get over their writing slump. I’ve been blogging for three years. I started on Blogspot, discovered WordPress and here we are. I’m still as into blogging today as I was when I first started, though I would like to think that my postings have matured since then (please, no comments if you don’t agree. *grin*) I have no intentions of stopping any time soon. I blog for myself. This is my journal, my sounding board, my venue to meet friends. I try to keep things bright and cheery and I love to make people laugh; I’m a die-hard optimist. To sum up? This blog is about life, love, and the pursuit of writing well. Now that you know a bit about me, let’s move on to the fun stuff. I’ve posted some songs, links to games and I have some party favors to give away. To participate in the party favor giveaways, all you have to do is leave a comment. That’s it.
