How To Create And Distribute Multimedia Web Presentations And Stunning Visual Photo Albums: Scrapblog - Video Review A new web-based service allowing powerful creation and easy online distribution of multimedia presentations and visual photo-albums is about to announce its official re-launch with a completely new feature-set, interface and components integration. The all-new Scrapblog is in fact a Formula 1 racer when it comes to assembling, enriching and packaging visual presentations for online digital delivery. In a whole different ball-game than typical photo-sharing services, Scrapblog competes somehow with higher end presentation-delivery applications such as Splashcast, and with lower-end photo- and presentation-sharing sites like Bubbleshare, Slideshare, SPresent and several other ones. Scrapblog goes beyond these presentation delivery services by offering both an authoring and a creative dimension to its toolset that is generally not available as a combination in the many other web-presentation and delivery tools that have appeared in the least 12 months. Scrapblog takes photos and videos only as a starting point, and while it can beautifully aggregate and arrange them for presentation delivery, it gives you also innovative ways to play around and dress up your content with multimedia elements and graphics. For those of you familiar with Mac apps, you’ll find Scrapblog remarkably similar to iWeb in design, while drawing lots of inspiration from Keynote (PowerPoint for the Mac) and borrowing some from from iDVD as well. In this step-by-step exclusive video review of the all-new Scrapblog I take you though the different elements that make this not only a great tool for sharing your photos and videos, but also an impressive presentation packaging and design tool breaking new ground on several fronts. Scrapblog showcases an impressive range of features which could even challenge some desktop applications for their breadth and power, while sporting usability and ease of use beyond most web-based apps. The fact that some of the key people behind Scrapblog come from an interface and usability design background shows quite clearly. Among the most interesting and innovative features packed into this next generation web application are:A drag and drop interface that lets you rotate, resize, layer and adjust images, text and even video on the fly Contextual menus that give you a broad range of features, including image transparency control, the addition of image reflections, cropping and layering, among many more Easy importing of your photos from both your desktop or several of the more popular photo-sharing services An impressive line-up of themes, design elements and backgrounds created by a group of international graphic designers Easy sharing options, including the ability to embed your finished Scrapblog presentations into your blog or website Coming to a browser near you any day now, Scrapblog packs a great many features into a simple interface, and manages to do so from a 100% online web application. To see how you can put together your own media rich photo and video presentations, and how easy it has just become to create great looking visual content, read on. Introducing Scrapblog In this first video I introduce you to the all-new Scrapblog. Scrapblog has been around for some time, and is an easy-to-use tool for creating media rich scrapbooks and presentations that you can share over the web. For the last two years, since its initial proof of concept edition, the Scrapblog team have been developing the rich web application that is featured in these exclusive behind-the-scenes videos. This new edition of Scrapblog genuinely does push the boundaries of what I thought possible in a web application, taking another step forward from already impressive services like online presentation tool SPresent and online photo-editing applications such as Picnik. Scrapblog makes it easy for people with little in the way of design skills to grab professionally designed graphic elements, customize them to their needs, and create impressive photo slide shows and presentations. Here’s how: The Scrapblog interface The Scrapblog interface is incredibly simple to get used to, but still manages to pack in an impressive feature-set. From the word go, almost anything you can see on a page layout can be dragged, dropped, deleted, resized and rotated without ever having to lay eyes on a menu. In this way, using one of the many themes provided by Scrapblog you can move around an array of professionally designed prefabricated design elements, creating your own custom layouts. If you do want more control however, contextual menus for every item on the canvas make it a straightforward task to change the opacity of an image, add or remove borders from photos, send images back and forward to create layers and any number of other useful features, depending on whether you are working with text, images or video. Organizing your Scrapblog In addition to having a well featured interface, Scrapblog makes it easy to arrange your presentations and customize their overall look. In the next video, I detail how you can:Easily add, remove and duplicate pages to your Scrapblog, so that you create layouts from scratch, or else use the same layout several times to create variations on a theme Sequence the pages in any order you like, and add impressive-looking transitions between each page Add background music from a selection of royalty-free tracks Here are the details: Scrapblog and photos Scrapblog does a great job of editing and adding slick presentation to your photos. Scrapblog makes this easy by allowing you to either upload images from your desktop, or else import complete sets of images from Flickr, Photobucket, Yahoo Photos and Webshots. Among the features packed into Scrapblog, it offers the ability to:Crop your photos using star-shaped, rectangular and ovoid cropping tools Add reflections and drop-shadows to your images Resize and rotate photos right from the main canvas Layer your photos one on top of the other, with the ability to change the stacking order of images, creating a sense of three-dimensionality See for yourself: Stickers and backgrounds If it were just a matter of editing photos Scrapblog would have a hard time carving out a niche for itself in what is becoming an increasingly crowded image-editing marketplace. However, key to the Scrapblog experience is the inclusion of great looking design elements and backgrounds that you can put to use in impressive presentations of your images and videos. Each Scrapblog theme, of which there are several, has its own set of backgrounds and ’stickers’ - discrete design elements that you can place around your canvas to create a desired effect. Think of stickers as designer clip art, as essentially that is what they are - the Scrapblog team drafted in graphic designers from around the world to create these themed elements. As I demonstrate in the next video you are not limited to using the stickers and backgrounds from a single theme, but can actually draw on any combination from a vast library in creating your own customized mash-ups of these design elements. Here’s how: Text and shapes Not only. The Scrapblog team have also made it a piece of cake to add text to your layouts. Whether using the fonts and styles provided, or by accessing your own font collection, which Scrapblog makes possible, you can add, rotate, resize and modify text to your heart’s content, in addition to being able to use comic-book-like speech and thought-bubbles should the mood take you. Then, should you want to take a hands-on approach to the design of your layouts, this is made possible through the range of shapes that you can stretch and change, selecting your own custom fills, gradients, level of opacity, drop-shadows and more besides. In this way you can create interesting designs to place around or in the midst of your photos and videos. Here are the details: Video and frames Two new and welcome additions to Scrapblog are the ability to import YouTube videos, alongside the use of easy to implement frames that will wrap around your images, regardless of any resizing or rotation you might apply to them. What is truly impressive about Scrapblog ability to edit YouTube videos is that you can resize them to any dimensions, with the same drag and drop ease as you can photos, and can even rotate the videos to create a skewed effect. This is the first time that I have seen this kind of real-time video morphing capability - as the video plays - outside of a high-end motion graphics application like Apple Motion. See for yourself how it works: Sharing your Scrapblog Once you have finished your Scrapblog you have a good few options available to you as to how you want to share it. In addition to being able to view your Scrapblog from the Scrapblog website, and invite others to do so, you can also share it with the wider community of users, or embed it in your blog or webpage. Scrapblog makes it easy to do any of the above, right from the main presentation console. Navigating your way through presentations can be as simple as pressing play, and watching the slide show unfold, complete with the transitions you added earlier. However, you can also manually skip from one page to the next, or else jump from slide to slide with the aid of contextual thumbnails that appear if you roll over the bottom of the player. Check it out for yourself: Conclusions I was very impressed by Scrapblog, and I would be hard pressed to find any complaints to make about it. What it offers is both a very simple, and yet very feature-rich way to share your photos and videos in a much more interesting way than the standard photo-sharing services out there. By combining and editing your photos and videos with professionally designed layouts, themes and graphic elements you can create impressive-looking slide-shows and presentations in a very short time. Scrapblog also offers a well-rounded range of tools that push the envelope on what is possible for web applications. These include, but are not limited to:Real-time drag-and-drop editing of photos, graphics and text, allowing you to rotate, resize and apply all manner of effects The inclusion of a rich library of graphic design elements for you to mash up into new and unique combinations in the presentation of your videos and photos Strong import features, with the ability to bring in photos from a range of popular photo-sharing services, and videos from the ubiquitous YouTube Knock-out transitions between the pages of your Scrapblog that look every bit as good as those on professional presentation software An eminently usable interface that has been very well thought through, making it a glitch-free pleasure to use In short if you are looking to create beautiful slide shows, deal-winning presentations or just scrapbooks full of your memories, Scrapblog has the tools to make this not only very simple, but also very good-looking indeed. Tomorrow (Thursday October 25) I’ll be spending a morning on the theme of New Literacies at Glasgow’s funky Urban Learning Space, in The Lighthouse on Mitchell Lane. It’s not too late to register for free if you want to come along for some discussions around the theme. I’m keen to find out myself whether, by preparing children for some kind of connected digital future, we’re actually preparing them for stuff the world of employment is nowhere near implementing. The audience will be made up of education folk, media people, designers, webby people… a good mix that should lead to some good discussions. One disclaimer: the seminar pack (pdf) had its front cover graphic changed from something a bit Second Life-y to a graphical rendition of digital immigrants and digital natives. If you know me, or have heard me speak recently, you’ll know that this couldn’t be further from my own belief set. A good starting point for tomorrow’s discussion points, perhaps. In this article Ryan Nichols documents his decisions in design process of the “Future Of”-sites (conferences “The Future of Web Apps“, “The Future of Web Design” and “The Future of Online Advertising“). Design by Metaphor If a client says he wants his new auction site to be like eBay, what does that mean? An artist hears It has a tacky color scheme. A developer hears It s scalable to 20 million users. A user hears It has feedback ratings on all sellers. An article about the way to come behind the ideas your clients have, the power of metaphors and its effective using in practice. Put Your Content in My Pocket Mobile Web is here, particularly since iPhone is here. Many of the ideas in this article can be useful and effective with other mobile devices. The processing power of these devices will continue to increase, bringing an end to a dumbed down mobile web. The iPhone may be just the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the storied life of HTML. The second part. Ten: The Next Big Thing CSS is ten years old this year. Such an anniversary is an opportunity to revisit the past and chart the future. H kon Wium Lie, the CSS-Evangelist who has proposed the idea of Cascading Stylesheets to W3C, motivates online-community for further changes. His proposal: instead of making pictures of fonts, the actual font files can be linked to and retrieved from the web. This way, designers can use TrueType fonts without having to freeze the text as background images. This can be done via media queries. The Ultimate Design Brief Your design can only be as good as the brief you worked from. The best projects are borne from briefs that are open enough to inspire ideas, while being specific enough to feel workable. Shaun Crowley shows how you can elicit these kinds of briefs by providing clients with briefing templates. This Way to the Web, Print Designers! The transition from print design to web design isn’t a simple task and has many challenges. Khoi Vahn provides print designers with some useful starting points and references. In Web absolute precision of positioning is replaced with the absolute flexibility of content presentation. “The fact that I m repeating that the Web is not like the printed page, that online information consumption is fundamentally different from print, is certainly adding nothing new to the conversation. The point I want to emphasize is not just that print designers need to be aware of this, but rather that they should approach it with genuine alacrity.” Fixing the Web “The Web is about 17 years old. For its first 10 years, Web technology evolved at breakneck speed. But for the last 7 years, Web technology hasn’t changed much at all. Is this a problem? There are clear benefits to having a stable development environment, but is Web technology stable or stale? Without innovation, will the Web suffer the same fate as any technology that becomes outdated because it fails to keep pace with users’ needs?” CSS Layouts: The Fixed. The Fluid. The Elastic. Mike Cherim explains the difference between the three layout types as well as their advantages and disadvantages. A fixed width site is one where the main wrapper is set to a specific immovable width independent of the user agent s display resolution. A fluid or liquid layout is created by not specifying a wrapper width at all or doing so using the percentage unit of measure. An elastic site s main wrapper and other elements are measured using ems as the unit of measure. Ems are relative proportionally to the text or font size. Home Sweet Home There s no place like home page. Paul Boag gives us 4 ways he works with clients to understand the value and kill off the misconceptions of this century s homepages. From the mythical fold to the killer app, this article proves you can go home again. Primary & Secondary Actions in Web Forms Luke Wroblewski discusses an optimal approach to designing usable online-forms. Result: different visual weight of primary (Submit) and secondary (Cancel) actions (e.g. font size) helps the visitor to avoid mistakes and get things done faster. Besides: the alignment of actions with a form s input elements provides a clear path to completion that helps people complete forms faster. iconeye manifestos Iconeye asked 50 of the most influential architects, designers and thinkers to share what they believe in in a Manifesto issue. The result: 50 manifestations of the prominent designers all around the globe. Banner Blindness: Old and New Findings (Jakob Nielsen) A new research by Jakob Nielsen proves: users rarely look at display advertisements on websites. Of the four design elements that do attract a few ad fixations, one is unethical and reduces the value of advertising networks. 15 Design Decisions That Annoy Readers An overview of 15 annoying practices in modern Web Design which should be avoided if possible. Give Me Some Zzzzz’s An extensive article about the z-index-property in CSS for stacking div-layers upon each other. Important: only absolutely or relatively positioned elements can have z-index. Semantics in HTML Many Web-Evangelists see the future of the Web in the concept of Semantic Web. But what exactly is it? And what is the current state of developments? John Allsopp about the Semantics in HTML. The Elements of Design Applied to the Web In a similar vein as the The Elements of Typographic Style Applied to the Web, the various principles of general design have their place in web based design. An overview of principles which are typical in modern site architecture: Balance, Proportion, Rhythm, Emphasis, Unity. The 10 Biggest Mistakes Freelancers Make, and How to Avoid Them Let s take a look at some of the most essential mistakes that freelancers, new and old, often make, and how to avoid them. Typical mistakes: missing deadlines, charging too little, lack of preliminary research, getting to personal, not proposing a follow-up idea. Getting A Form’s Structure Right A comprehensive article about the effective design of web-forms - with many examples and explanations. Design-Showcases, Inspiration muse | a collection of inspiration A “fresh” Design-showcase by Drew Wilson. Muse will not only showcase great art, but it will also attempt to showcase the inspiration behind the art. And ultimately the inspiration of great artists/creators. Showcase: WordPress CSS Gallery Theme A WordPress-Theme of design-showcase-sites, such as CSS-Design-Showcases. There are probably too many of them; however, it’s nice to have the template ready to hand once you need it. Contact Forms Showcase A gallery of contact forms includes 30 entries. MagWerk Over 100 pages of beautiful design, illustration, photos and interviews with designers and graphic artists. The September-issues of “encore”. CMS Showcase CMS Showcase presents categorizes designs not by their content, structure or outer appearance, but by the weblog-engine they are built upon. Logo Trends 2007 The Trends in Logo Design 2007 in a brief overview. typography - a photoset on Flickr A showcase of beautiful typefaces in a regularly updated Flickr pool. Letra Latinas 2006 - more beauties of modern typography. Portfolio - a photoset on Flickr Polaroid-Photos - partly from advertisements and print materials. Excellent for looking up some “working” color palettes. Idea Mapping Set - a photoset on Flickr How to document your ideas on a blank sheet of paper? Elegant examples for Mindmaps in a Flickr pool. The Last Click Content Aware Image Resizing (YouTube, Quicktime, hi-res video)) Over the last decade visitors had to put up with the static presentation of images, while web-writers had to get used to the limited possibilities for optimizing and preparing images for Web. Now might be the right time to rethink the concept finally. With this new technology, developed by Ariel Shamir and Shai Avidan, images can be scaled and formed dynamically: apart from dimensions also the content of the images itself changes. Since Shai Avidan was hired by Adobe, the technique might be used already in the next versions of Adobe Photoshop. Absolutely fascinating technique. A Brief Message The project gives designers a podium to deliver their messages, criticism and standpoints to the design community. The only requirement: designers have to be brief and have max. 200 words for their messages. It applies to comments too. HistoryShots Information Graphics - Prints 12 impressive data visualization approaches. Further approaches. Blog Action Day What would happen if every blog published posts discussing the same issue, on the same day? One issue. One day. Thousands of voices. On October 15th, bloggers around the web will unite to put a single important issue on everyone s mind - the environment. Every blogger will post about the environment in their own way and relating to their own topic. Our aim is to get everyone talking towards a better future. Everybody can participate. Silicon Valley Turns Out to Honor Top Technologists Silicon Valley is not known for paying much attention to its own history but things are changing. The Computer History Museum’s 2007 Fellow Awards was sold out as much of Silicon Valley’s aristocracy turned out for a $250 fund raising dinner that paid tribute to four top technologists: Morris Chang, John Hennessy, David A. Patterson and Charles Thacker. Morris Chang helped create the fabless chip industry. And in doing so, he created a massive innovation platform by enabling small bands of chip designers to buy production time as they needed it. Chip companies no longer needed to own and maintain hugely expensive chip fabs. John Hennessy helped develop the RISC microprocessor, whose features are found in all modern microprocessors. As president of Stanford University, he has made huge contributions to education, and the creation of a student body that has gone on to found many of Silicon Valley’s largest companies. And his work has helped generate huge licensing revenue for the university. David Patterson made important contributions to microprocessor design and RAID data storage technologies. As head of Computer Science at the University of California at Berkeley, he has helped educate generations of computer engineers. Charles Thacker helped create the personal computer. His work at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center led to the Alto, the machine that inspired Apple Computer and featured a windows graphical user interface. He co-developed Ethernet and also the laser printer. Tags: Morris Chang, John Hennessy, David A. Patterson, Charles Thacker, John Hennessy, David Patterson, Charles Thacker Source: www.podtech.net
SpoolCast: An Interview with Cameron Moll SpoolCast: An Interview with Cameron Moll Recorded: September 7th, 2007 from the d.Construct 2007 Conference, Brighton, England Brian Christiansen, UIE Podcast Producer Duration: 30m | File size: 17 MB [ Subscribe to our podcast via iTunes. This link will launch the iTunes application.] [ Subscribe with other podcast applications.] On my recent trip to the d.Construct 2007 conference in Brighton, England, I had the good fortune to sit down with acclaimed designer Cameron Moll. Cameron is the Interaction Design Manager for the LDS Church in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the work he oversees reaches a world-wide audience. His very popular design blog Authentic Boredom, regularly features engaging articles and unleashed the “wicked worn” look across the web, which earned him a mention on NPR. Cameron’s excellent talk at d.Construct was about the differences between good design and great design. (Fortunately, he’s covering this topic — and much more — in his almost sold out full-day UI12 tutorial session.) I found Cameron’s perspectives on graphic design theory, HCI principals, and his communication-centric approach both fascinating and stunningly effective. In our conversation, Cameron let me in on his background and his unusual journey to both design and the web. We discussed the importance of getting to know your customer before you make design decisions. We also discussed what to do after each project so you take its lessons forward. Like many of us, Cameron works in a large, complex organization. This means managing design decisions and wrestling (often inflexible) enterprise technology. He talked to me about how he has integrated his real-world experiences into his UI12 tutorial and how he is working on bringing elegance and great function to his complex work projects. Even though Cameron is recognized for his world-class design talent, I am surprised how friendly and humble he is. We had a fascinating conversation that I think you’ll enjoy. A sequel to its popular forerunner, this edition casts the net even farther in examining the reasons and history behind various objects of design that have had a significant impact on our culture. The objects discussed range from the vintage posters that promoted concerts and fairs during the 1930s to a Rolling Stones CD cover from the 1990s. This volume also investigates larger movements and phenomena, including Norman Rockwell’s effect on Americana, and the Cartoon Network’s hold on children. Like the first volume, this is an eclectic look at how, why, and if graphic design, in the broadest sense, works as an influence on the public eye. Designers, students, and anyone interested in the history and dynamics of graphics as art and craft will find this an engaging and instructive read. Customer Review: Certainly worthy reading material Good reading material particularly for serious graphic designers interested in expanding the role of graphic design in today’s market place.
